about this blog

everyday joys abound. it's a matter of perspective. for every trial there is a joy. for every loss there is a gain. finding the benefits to typical challenges brings to focus the beauty of daily life. it's as simple as keeping what i call a joy journal, jotting down the small gifts of being alive. the scent of a fresh breeze. the handshake of a friend. sounds and sights. aromas and textures. life is a grand blessing, but it's one that is carefully made of tiny and simple joys. just like a mural, it's pieced together stroke by stroke with the light and dark elements living together (one is never found without the other). This blog inspires us to open our eyes and hearts to these tiny but tangible building blocks that can create a world of celebration... and a life of possibilities.

I encourage people to be happy in the face of sadness. To realize that joy is contagious and that they have within themsleves, that we all do, all we need to be fully realized individuals. That we don't need gurus, experts, doctors, preachers, psychiatrists... that they are all unnecessary.

My heart leaps up when I behold
A rainbow in the sky:
So was it when my life began;
So it is now I am a man;
So be it when I shall grow old,
Or let me die!
The Child is father of the Man;
And I could wish my days to be
Bound each to each by natural piety.

Let's love rhythm, the nosy tenements, the guiro, the decima, the lithograph, a box of cigars, the African toque de santo drumming, the ethnic street vendor, the mulatto woman with her golden rings, the rumba player, sweet potato pudding and joy.

No company is far preferable to bad, because we are more apt to catch the vices of others than their virtues, as disease is more contagious than health.

Love is a force more formidable than any other. It is invisible - it cannot be seen or measured, yet it is powerful enough to transform you in a moment, and offer you more joy than any material possession could.

Never forget that life can only be nobly inspired and rightly lived if you take it bravely and gallantly, as a splendid adventure in which you are setting out into an unknown country, to face many a danger, to meet many a joy, to find many a comrade, to win and lose many a battle.

Do not judge from mere appearances; for the lift laughter that bubbles on the lip often mantles over the depths of sadness, and the serious look may be the sober veil that covers a divine peace and joy. The bosom can ache beneath diamond brooches; and many a blithe heart dances under coarse wool.
